How to Identify Poly B Pipe in Your Home

A Guide for Edmonton & Alberta Homeowners

If your home was built between the late 1970s and mid-1990s, there’s a strong possibility it contains Poly B (polybutylene) plumbing. Because Poly B has become a known insurance and resale concern across Alberta, many homeowners want to confirm whether it’s present before problems arise.

The good news? In many cases, Poly B is relatively easy to identify if you know what to look for.

Should You Replace Poly-B If You Have It?

Not every Poly B system has failed, but age increases risk. If your home still contains original Poly B from the 1980s or 1990s, it may be approaching the end of its expected lifespan.

Many Edmonton homeowners choose to replace it proactively for peace of mind, insurance stability, and resale value. If you’re still considering, you can read some of our related articles to help make your decision:

Step 1: Check the Age of Your Home

Poly B was widely installed in Canadian homes from approximately 1978 to 1995.

If your home was built during that time frame and still has its original plumbing, there’s a reasonable chance Poly B may have been used.

Homes built after the mid-1990s typically use PEX, CPVC, or copper. If you see plastic piping in a home built after this period, it is likely one of these materials rather than Poly B. Checking for pipe markings is the most reliable way to confirm.

If you’re unsure of your home’s construction year, property tax records or real estate listings often include this information.

Step 2: Look at the Pipe Colour

The most common identifying feature of Poly B is its colour. Grey is by far the most common colour for Poly B supply lines, with blue also found in some installations. If you see grey plastic water lines in your mechanical room, under sinks, or along basement ceilings, it may be Poly B.

Black Poly-B exists but is rare; importantly, black plastic pipe in Canadian homes is most commonly ABS drain pipe, which is a completely different material used for drainage rather than water supply. Always check pipe markings to confirm and note that Poly B will only be found on pressurized water supply lines, not drain lines.

However, colour alone isn’t definitive. Some other materials can look similar, which is why checking for markings is important.

Step 3: Look for the “PB” Stamp

Why Proactive Identification Matters

Many homeowners discover Poly B only when:

  • An insurance company asks about it
  • They prepare to sell their home
  • A home inspector flags it
  • A leak develops

Identifying it early allows you to make informed decisions about monitoring, maintenance, or replacement before an emergency forces the issue.

Insurance providers in Alberta are increasingly asking about Poly B during policy renewals or new applications. Confirming what material your home has can prevent delays or surprises.

What If You’re Still Not Sure?

Some plumbing materials can look similar, especially in older homes.

If you’re unsure whether your piping is Poly B, the safest option is a professional inspection.

At Always Plumbing & Heating, we can:

  • Confirm whether Poly B is present
  • Assess overall condition
  • Identify potential risk areas
  • Provide guidance on next steps

In many cases, identification takes only a short on-site evaluation.
